Work has officially kicked off on the underground portion on Saigon’s first underground metro station at the intersection of Le Loi and Nguyen Hue Streets.

Hundreds of Japanese and Vietnamese engineers and workers broke ground last Friday on the 4-floor Municipal Theatre Station which will stretch 36 meters below the surface, according to Bui Xuan Cuong, head of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Railway Management Board.
The first floor of the underground station should be completed in February 2015 and the entire 190x26 meter structure is scheduled to finish in 2017, reports Tuoi Tre.
There are, however, conflicting reports as to when the $2.49 billion, 20km Suoi Tien - Ben Thanh line will go into operation.
The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has publicly committed to a 2018 launch while the HCMC People’s Committee said that it had been pushed back to 2020.
Either way, we’ll have quite a wait ahead of us before we get to do this.
