A quiet moment in District 5's Chinatown. This area feels like walking into the past. While the rest of Saigon changes at a mindblowing pace, this area seems to be resistant to the ever moving gears of "progress." Hemside haircuts in one of the many little enclaves of District 5’s Chinatown. While the rest of Saigon lurches forward into modernity, this area often offers a glimpse into the past with its firmly set roots in tradition. Silhouettes of these twisted electrical wiring nests are a familiar and iconic sight throughout Vietnam. Views such as this one are beginning to fade away as efforts ramp up to relocate wiring underground in many districts. • Monsoon Funeral (A Serial Documentary Narrative, #10) • So if you’re following along, my Vietnamese cousins’ grandmother in Ho Chi Minh City died, and this is the serial, multiday story of her funeral. If you're late to the party (well, the funeral), scroll down to the photograph with the bright orange silken death shroud. It starts there. • That night, after accompanying her remains to the morgue, where she rests in state until the family’s longtime fortune tellers can be consulted, I return to the Kwan Yin pagoda on Lao Tu Street, where I had bought the lotus blossoms that morning, to light some joss sticks — my family has been visiting this pagoda for generations, and it is the site of so much emotion, the depository of so many prayers for fortune, for fertility, for gratitude, and now of death.
