Vietnamese Startups Hold Their Own Among Southeast Asia's Top 30 Tech Outfits

Vietnam's tech star is on the rise. These days, startup communities are thriving across the country, new crowdfunding laws are being developed to help burgeoning tech companies get off the ground and Vietnamese mobile games are taking the world by storm.

Last week, Tech in Asia released its list of Southeast Asia's top 30 tech entrepreneurs, ranking the region's most noteworthy tech companies based on current revenue, traction, funding figures and, of course, the individual entrepreneurs behind each business.

While the master lineup includes a whole host of high-profile tech outfits, from Malaysia's GrabTaxi to Singapore's Lazada, three Vietnam-based founders managed to make the cut, including local search engine Coc Coc, whose CEO Victor Lavrenko has catapulted the site to 3.7 million searches a day in Vietnam and as many as 8.7 million active users per month.

Nguyen Duc Tai, the brains behind The Gioi Di Dong, also features on the list thanks to his mammoth electronics business, which rakes in US$370 million a year in revenue. The company also recently announced plans to launch a chain of grocery stores in future.

Rounding out the top end of the lineup at number three is Le Hong Minh, the founder of VNG, one of Vietnam's most successful games publishing companies. In addition to earning millions from its gaming products, VNG also owns the uber-popular Vietnamese chat app Zalo and counts a whopping US$100 million in revenue.

Not bad for a burgeoning startup country. With potential like this, it's only a matter of time before more high-profile Vietnamese tech giants are turning heads around Southeast Asia and the world.
