According to a report released last Wednesday by market research company, Nielsen, Vietnamese consumers are the world’s thriftiest.

Vietnam led the way in the global report with 78% of Vietnamese surveyed saying they put their extra cash into savings after covering living expenses, the highest rate in the world.
The Q1/2015 Nielsen Global Consumer Confidence Report found that Vietnamese saving habits were part of a larger trend in SE Asia (defined by the company as Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam) that claims a 71% savings rate, nine points higher compared to the same time last year.
Tuoi Tre broke down some of the other interesting findings from the report:
- Forty-four percent of Vietnamese consumers spend their spare cash on holidays, and 40 percent on hi-tech purchases.
- Eighty-six percent of Vietnamese consumers have changed their household spending habits over the past 12 months to save more, with more than half of them believing the country is in an economic depression, according to the report.
- The report found that 62 percent of Vietnamese consumers have cut spending for new clothes, whereas 61 percent try to get smaller electricity and gas bills.
- Fifty-seven percent have reduced the amount of money spent on family entertainment activities, and 44 percent have delayed their plans to buy new major appliances.
The survey showed that those who don’t have their cash spend it on vacations and high-tech devices because why save money when you can buy a gold iPhone?
