While we can't imagine testing a driverless vehicle in, say, Saigon traffic, the orderly streets of Singapore seem like the perfect place to give self-driving machinery a whirl.
According to Mashable Asia, the Lion City could have its own driverless pods in operation by the end of 2016. The 24-seater pods, which already exist in Abu Dhabi, run on electricity and are capable of traveling on small roads within gated communities and school campuses.
To make Singapore's driverless pods a reality, Dutch technology firm 2getthere has joined forces with the Lion City's transportation operator, SMRT. Together, the duo have formed 2getthere Asia, the firm which is expected to operate Singapore's new vehicles. If all goes according to plan, 2getthere claims, the pods could handle up to 8,000 passengers per hour traveling in a single direction.
