City officials are planning to revamp the long, narrow park bordering the Saigon River in District 1 and host a weekend market at the site.
According to Tuoi Tre, district authorities have long sought to renovate the park, which formerly served as a parking lot and terminal for the now-defunct Thu Thiem ferry.
When Saigon Tourist acquired the site in 2013, the state-run tourism company revealed plans to revitalize the space, however after years of little to no progress, the area, which sits between Ton Duc Thang Street and the Saigon River, has fallen into disrepair.
Moving forward, however, city officials aim to upgrade the current park before establishing a regular weekend market meant to promote Vietnamese products to both Saigoneers and tourists.
While there is no word yet on how the specifics of the park’s renovation or when the weekend market would begin, this news comes after Van Thinh Phat Group proposed a park and underground shopping mall for the space in June of last year. Though the outcome of this proposal was never officially announced, news outlets noted at the time that the Bach Dang Wharf area is zoned as a special region in the city’s urban planning, stipulating that the land must be for public use only.
