Saigon seems to stepping up its waterway development game. After cleaning and refurbishing large swaths of the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe Canal, the city has just announced plans for 11 new piers to be built in order to stimulate waterway tourism.
Approved by the People’s Committee of HCMC, the first 7 piers will be constructed in 2013 – 2014, presumably in District 1. Four more piers will be built in 2015.
The piers will be built by state-owned, Saigontourist and the Department of Transport will seek private investments to develop the works.
According to SGGP, the piers will service short day tours with the purpose of “presenting daily activities of local people along canals to international visitors.”
Great. Now the city just needs to invest in some real and functional waterway parks and public spaces for locals and tourists alike.
