In an effort to alleviate traffic congestion around Tan Son Nhat International Airport, local authorities are considering a five-kilometer, six-ramp elevated highway system.
According to Tuoi Tre, the project is expected to cost VND3.5 trillion (US$157 million). Ho Chi Minh City-based Dong Mekong Co. Ltd. and Hanoi-based Dong A Infrastructure Corp will join Corporation 319 under the Ministry of Defense to construct the highway system.
The 2.6-kilometer main highway would run from Truong Son to Terminals T1, T2 and the upcoming T3 at Tan Son Nhat. In addition, it would also connect Nguyen Van Troi and Hoang Van Thu.
Bui Xuan Cuong, director of the Department of Transport, told Tuoi Tre that this project would tie in with another recently proposed elevated highway system linking Cong Hoa in Tan Binh District with Phan An bridge in Binh Thanh District.
It looks like it's only a matter of time before Saigon's transportation infrastructure moves above street level like in other Southeast Asian megacities.
