Saigon's streets will soon be illuminated by energy-saving lights if a new public lighting plan gets the go-ahead.
The city’s Department of Transport recently submitted a proposal to the municipal People’s Committee requesting that all public lights be replaced by LED lamps, reports VnExpress.
The current lighting system utilizes high-pressure sodium light bulbs. If approved, the replacement lights could set the city budget back VND1.3 trillion (US$58.4 million), however the energy-saving light bulbs would help to slash VND88 billion (US$3.9 million) from Saigon’s annual expenditures and also eliminate 31 tons of CO2 emissions each year, according to the city’s Center of Energy Conservation.
The proposal is part of an effort by local authorities to cut down on energy consumption and boost efficiency in the southern hub. According to its plan, the department hopes to reduce the energy used for public amenities such as lighting and public transport by at least 10%. Some Saigon streets, including Truong Dinh and Thanh Thai, have already been outfitted with LED lights, while the proposal expects the rest of the city to follow by 2020, reports Bao Dat Viet.
