While some of the city's construction projects are lagging – see, for instance, the skeletal riverside tower at the end of Ton Duc Thang – Vinhomes Central Park has breezed ahead, rising by the day from a dusty construction site in Binh Thanh District. Though construction only began in late 2014, the enormous development is beginning to take shape, living up to the hype of its renderings.

Perhaps the most exciting part of Vinhomes Central Park is its crown jewel. Landmark 81, designed to reach a height of 461.2 meters, will become the tallest building nationwide once it’s complete in 2018, according to REIC. At the center of the deluxe complex, this record-breaking tower asserts Vingroup’s presence in the skyward race that's taken urban Vietnam by storm.

Landmark 81 will house a high-end shopping center, cinema and indoor ice-skating rink as well as a five-star hotel, serviced residential apartments and office space for lease. A 360-degree observatory is also in the works.

Overall, the entire 241,000-square-meter project boasts a budget of US$1.4 billion and will fall along the planned Saigon Metro Ben Thanh-Suoi Tien route.

UK-based firm Atkins, the designer of Landmark 81, says its silhouette is both “modern and unusual”. Another source says that it was inspired by the image of young bamboo, a national plant and emblem of Vietnam’s unity and strength. The development features contemporary landscape design, merging natural beauty with modern spaces.
