[Photos] The State of Saigon's Metro: 2017 Progress

Last year you had a chance to marvel at Hanoi’s first metro line from above, now get ready for a glimpse into Saigon’s future Metro Line 1.

In a recent photo feature, Tuoi Tre quoted the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) as saying that the city’s most prominent megaproject is 67.4% complete. The line links Ben Thanh Market in downtown Saigon with Suoi Tien Amusement Park in District 9. When finished, Metro Line 1 will span 17.2 kilometers, including 11 stops and five overhead bridges.

JICA also shared with the newspaper that most of the line’s infrastructure requirements have been fulfilled. If all goes according to plan, installation of the railways will commence this August.

However, it is important to note that the project currently faces many financial obstacles. Earlier this year, the management board of the public railway network submitted a report showing that progress is stalled as contractors are not getting the money they need to expedite the project.
