After the new bill on alcohol consumption was passed by the National Assembly, stricter regulations on driving after having consumed alcohol were enforced.
Specifically, while the old law only applied fines to drivers with a blood alcohol content of over 50mg/100ml or a breath alcohol content of over 0.25mg/l, the new law considers driving with any alcohol in your system to be a violation, regardless of the amount.
Within the two months after the new regulation went into effect on January 1, 23,590 drivers have been fined for having alcohol in their breath while driving, according to Lao Dong. The total fines collected from these violations amounted to VND90 billion.
Out of these cases, 93.64% involved motorbike drivers, while 6.13% were car drivers. There were also five violations involving special-purpose vehicles and 47 violations on bicycles and electric scooters.
The provinces with the highest number of cases are Dak Lak (1,317 cases), Tay Ninh (1,200 cases), Thanh Hoa (1,176 cases), Bac Giang (1,042 cases), Dong Nai (970 cases), Ho Chi Minh City (948 cases), Hanoi (853 cases), Gia Lai (834 cases) and Ca Mau (818 cases).
The number of severe violators that had a breath alcohol content of over 0.4mg/l is highest in Tra Vinh (394 cases), Ca Mau (349 cases), Ho Chi Minh City (288 cases) and Thanh Hoa (209 cases).
In the first two months of 2020, the number of traffic accidents also decreased by 36.27%, while the number of deaths decreased by 19.39% and the number of injuries dropped by 44.21%.
