Yesterday's WWDC saw some major product announcements, highlighted by an updated Macbook Air, re-designed Mac Pro and new versions of iOS and Mac OSX. Major changes aside, there was one element of the new iOS which is of some relevance here in Vietnam – Activation lock.
According to Apple’s Craig Federighi, senior vice president of software engineering:
“if it’s been stolen, with Activation lock, if a thief tries to turn off the phone or wipe the device entirely, they won’t be able to re-activate it.”
We’re a bit skeptical that this will completely stop iCrime in our fair Vietnam as these devices have value even if locked down. And, considering the limitless bounds of Vietnamese ingenuity, it probably won’t be long before someone figures out how to bypass this feature.
