The setback-prone undertaking in Dong Nai Province will take stress off Saigon's overburdened airport when the first phase of construction is complete in six years.
The Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) updated transportation authorities on the schedule based on having finished the first phase of the feasibility study, structural mapping and terrain analysis. The next step is writing the environmental impact assessment report which will begin in July and take nine months to complete.
The report is a collaboration between Japan Airport Consultants, Inc., Nippon Koei, ADP Ingénierie and Airport Design and Construction Consultancy from Vietnam.
In addition to completing the full feasibility study, which is scheduled to be submitted in October, the ACV must continue with land clearing efforts. Specifically, 4,800 local households and 26 organizations must be moved by 2021 at a cost of nearly VND22.9 trillion (US$ 978.7 million). The undertaking has already attracted negative press for observed delays.
The first phase, when completed in 2025, will consist of one runway and one terminal to handle 25 million passengers a year and 1.2 million tons of cargo. The next two phases will be built in 2030-2035 and 2040-2050 respectively, adding additional terminals and runways ultimately providing for 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo. The cost of the total project is VND336.6 trillion (US$16.03 billion) with VND114.5 trillion (US$5.45 billion) marked for the first phase.
