As a new year approaches so, too, do a new set of traffic regulations.
According to Tuoi Tre, January 1, 2017 will bring a handful of new traffic laws for local motorists.
Most of these rules – and the fines attached to them – affect truck drivers whose vehicles exceed the weight limit of a specific road or bridge, however there is one fairly fundamental new rule aimed at all drivers. Starting on January 1, motorists caught using their mobile phones while driving can be fined between VND600,000 and VND800,000 for the offense.
Individuals and organizations are also required to register their vehicles under the appropriate names; those who fail to do so can be fined up to VND400,000.
As with most traffic regulations, consistent enforcement of these rules will likely be a challenge, however the implementation of the rule marks, at the very least, a step forward for road safety.
