After unveiling a new code of etiquette for civil servants last December, Hanoi is drafting another code for its residents and visitors in hopes of rebranding the capital as a “civilized and polite” destination.
According to Tuoi Tre, the code will prohibit people who are living, working, studying or even visiting the capital from cursing, smoking, spitting, urinating and vandalizing property as well as wearing skimpy or offensive clothing in public spaces.
Hanoi is also looking to incorporate mass media in the process: according to Tuoi Tre, those who follow the code will be praised in public while those who don’t will be shamed.
In particular, the capital’s first move would be to publish the names of people who wear inappropriate clothes in the city, the news source reports. However, it remains unclear how Hanoi will police its residents and visitors’ conduct.
In an effort to market itself as an attractive destination for tourism and investment, last year Hanoi also launched a US$2 million advertising campaign with CNN in order to lure more foreign visitors its way.
