Dong Nai Removes Entire Commune to Make Room for Long Thanh Airport

From June 1, Suoi Trau Commune in Long Thanh District, Dong Nai Province no longer exists on Vietnam's administrative map.

Once home to 6,700 residents comprising 2,300 households, the former 1,385-hectare commune will be cleared off to pave way for the construction of Long Thanh's 5,000-hectare airport project, leaving 126 hectares of land that will be merged into a neighboring commune, Tuoi Tre reports.

Suoi Trau's former residents will be resettle in Binh Son Commune and Bau Can Commune in the district. The central committee has set out VND11 trillion for the relocation process in all areas affected by the airport construction.

“We already have officials at work to respond to residents’ requests for corrections to their personal documents once the dissolution takes effect,” Suoi Trau Chairman Nguyen Van Hiep told the news source.

The total resettlement area covers 364 hectares, reserved for building houses and religious centers. Relocation will start at the end of July this year. According to Vo Van Chanh, deputy director of the Dong Nai People's Committee, there are many sizes of land plots, ranging from a minimum of 80 square meters to 100 square meters, 250 square meters and more.

In terms of organizing new jobs, people of working age will receive training in vocational centers that will allow them to work in nearby industrial zones. For residents whose main economic activity is farming, authorities are planning to organize high-tech agricultural cooperatives that will enable them to continue farming on sites that have been cleared but on which construction hasn't started yet. Local authorities will also reportedly work with the transport ministry and vocational centers to provide jobs near the airport to the offspring of Suoi Trau residents.
