On July 15, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) announced that it had completed the feasibility study for Phase 1 of Long Thanh International Airport and submitted it to the Ministry of Transport.
According to VietnamNet, the airport is set to receive a total investment of VND336.63 trillion (US$14.8 billion), and be divided into three phases. To complete the feasibility study for phase one of the airport’s construction, ACV signed a contract with JFV, a consortium of French, Japanese and Vietnamese companies.
The feasibility study is being considered by the Ministry of Transport before being submitted to the central government and the National Assembly. Besides the feasibility study, an environmental impact assessment for the first phase was also completed on schedule. The report is being evaluated by the State Assessment Council before being submitted to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for approval.
The government of Dong Nai aims to complete site clearance, compensation and resettlement for phase one this year, according to VietnamNet.
Last month, Vo Van Chanh, deputy director of the Dong Nai People's Committee, told Tuoi Tre that the central government assigned VND11 trillion for site clearance, compensation and resettlement in Loc An and Binh Son communes in Long Thanh District, which covers 364 hectares. Resettlement is expected to start after the Dong Nai Rubber Corporation hands over its farm plot in the two communes by the end of July.
If things keep going as planned, construction of the first phase could start in late 2020 and finish in 2025. Once completed, the first part of the airport would be able to serve 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo each year. It is expected to ease the overloading of Tan Son Nhat International Airport. Last year, that airport served 38.3 million passengers, while its designed capacity is only 25 million passengers per year.
In the second phase of Long Thanh (2025–2035), another runway and one more terminal will be constructed to transport 50 million passengers and 1.5 million tonnes of cargo per year. After the third phase (after 2035), the airport’s maximum capacity will reach 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo per year.
